Antibiotics were the “wonder drugs” of modern medicine after their discovery in the 1930’s, and are still the most widely prescribed drugs in industrialized countries around the world. Extensive use of antibiotics has led to the development of resistance in bacteria, a fear that many scientists and experts expressed as early as the 1950’s. Today, antibiotic resistance is considered a global concern that continuously calls for new drugs to combat the swiftly evolving “superbugs”. For many years, scientists have been developing new synthetic and natural antibiotics, but all are prone to resistance and can quickly become ineffective. With resistance rapidly developing, we need to find practical and safe ways of fighting bacterial infections.
